What inspired you to launch your own website?
Trouble finding a specialized website dedicated to Real Estate Classifieds just for Real Estate Investors.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
I launched the site in May, 2009. It has since been growing every day as the word spreads about the great site and ease of use.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
The name goldfishlist came from many different areas, but gold is what real estate investors are looking for. The gold fish is considered good luck. And it was very catchy with friends!
What makes your website different from other, similar offerings?
Goldfishlist.com only offers real estate for investors. It is broken up into basic categories that are popular among investors. Further, you can enter as much information as you like. There is no limit to your postings. You can also post html code to enhance your postings.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
As the site grows I believe it should be sold to someone who can take it to the next level. However, in the meantime it is very enjoyable to read the classifieds!
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
There has been a lot of time invested into the promotion of the website. However, it is rewarding and the advertising revenues have already paid back the intial investment in the software and hosting.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would add maps, interactive content for new users, and include educational sections. Further, I would ad more advertising. Lastly, I would include a large social area!
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
With the hosting packages available today it is easy to increase capacity quickly. In fact, after the first 30 days I had to increase the bandwith to handle the volume. The software is robust enough to handle unlimited users and postings. So bring on the volume!
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
During the initial setup I incorrect reinstalled a part of the software which over wrote the largest section of ads listed on the site. I had to send an email to each user asking them to repost the ad. Unfortunately, many did not post again. However, the site continued to grow.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Promoting the site with a very limited budget is difficult. I have done many requests for free links and some limited advertising. But, by far away the most successful marketing strategy is direct email. Many times people will write back thanking me for the information.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
As mentioned before. Direct emails are the most successful method of promoting the site. Approximately 2% of the people write back thanking me for the information about post on www.goldfishlist.com.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It has been slower going in the beginning. And there are spikes and dips in daily volume that I still do not understand.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
Goldfishlist.com has been running for almost 3 months. I the site pays for itself with ad revenue from 3rd parties. Our posters are never charged for posting on the site. The site will continue to run as long as users continue to find enjoyment and use for it.
What is the best ad that has been placed on Goldfishlist.com?
Well, that is a tough question. But, there have been ads about divorce situations that turn into a comical post and then there are postings from Europe where the translation is not quite right and it makes for some fun reading.
