Is New Jersey Really America's Armpit?

10/31/09 19:56

For a long time now, New Jersey has had this reputation of being the armpit not only of New York, but the entire United States. What are the first images that come up to your mind when you hear New Jersey? Pollution. Temperamental people. An entrie street surrounding a major highway. Lots of cheap-o diners. The accent.

Well, you can't really blame yourself, because there must be some basis to this reputation. I've heard a lot of people say that there's nothing really good to look at in New Jersey. These same people say that the towns after towns after towns are all the same. Some Garden State residents hate their home state as well.

I recently read this article from someone who lives from the Garden State himself. He elaborated some of the good points of the state, and some of the bad points. I can't really distinguished what he was presenting as bad or as good, though, because they seem to be all mashed up. I believe it was a fairly balanced assessment, which is kinda surprising for a resident. It used to be either a resident hates the state so much, or he/she likes it so much.

So what does the author say about the Garden State? Basically, he just confimed the fact there are LOTS of diners in the state. It has become som sort of state culture. Don't fret if you tasted something of bad quality, though, because you are bound to have some of the bad food, the good food, and everything in between. And I quote, "It won't kill you. It never killed me"

The author also admitted that the driving is actually bad because of the rude drivers. He also said that pollution is a serious problem. He was quick to say that the situation isn't as bad as in other states, though.

On the brighter side, the author says it is much easier to find something that you want to purchase, because the state does seem to have a lot of malls, especially strip malls. That means if you are a shopper, you don't have to wait for the delivery of your online orders. You can get them instantly. In addition to that, the proximity of the state to major cities like NYC and Boston makes it a suitable location of residence.

And, oh, the author thinks people in NJ hardly have the "Jersey" accent at all.

So does New Jersey deserve the title of being America's armpit? Check it out yourself, decide, and tell us about it here.
