Fly2let is a complete online resource for information and advice on overseas property investment. Our aim is to help our visitors and subscribers become the best informed property investors in the market: up to date with opportunities, responsibilities, pitfalls, and latest requirements. We are independent and our editorial pages are objective and unbiased.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
From our background in traditional publishing, web development seemed a natural progession for a number of the titles that we published at that time. It soon became clear that online magazines could be much better than traditional weekly or monthly magazines with the ability to keep readers completely up to date all the time.
How did you decide on a name for your website?
After launching another of our property related websites in early 2003 which focuses on UK property investment it soon became clear how quickly the overseas market was developing so we decided to launch a sister site to Residential Landlord. Initially we had been fixed on the name Overseas Landlord as this tied in well with our already established site. But on a return flight from a ski trip to France, we were discussing the buy to let market and the development of the new site when my business partner, out of know where announced 'fly to let'. Without much thought I replyed thats got to be the name we both very quickly agreed.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
We see Fly2let much like a free online magazine rather than an internet portal. Our news and featured articles are regularly updated by our in house editorial team, while our partnership managers source the most relevant and up to date investment information and opportunities from around the world to continually update the many featured destinations that we carry.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
We are very enthused to continue the development of our already well established sites for the foreseeable future. We also plan to launch two new free information websites this year - which are currently being developed. It is certainly not in our mind to sell up as we have lots of ideas and fully intend to continue to expand our business, and are also very happy with our work. But of course if someone made us an offer of an extremely healthy sum this would also be considered! :)
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Search engine optimisation is key and of course gaining high natural search placements with the big search engines is vital for any successful website. In this respect google and their ever changing algerythms have probably caused the most head scratching - especially in the early days !!
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
Fly to let was launched in April 2004 and has continually grown in size and popularity since that time, which we are very proud of. We have also very recently given the site a revamp which is now live for all to see.
